The European Daily was created to give mobile and open-minded Europeans a daily newspaper. At its core, it is a reliable, authoritative source for quality news and analysis in English, from a European perspective, and a platform for pan-European debate.
Designed for the mobile European, “Europe” is treated as one domestic space giving readers, from Lisbon and Helsinki alike, a relevant frame of reference. Articles written from a European – rather than a national – perspective help readers make sense of an increasingly interconnected continent.
Coverage is general and includes politics, business, culture and sport. As the only general platform for pan-European debate we attract a wide range of high-profile commentators and columnists. Content is in English and of high quality. We stand for intelligent and curious reporting that is serious but never boring.
“I support the establishment of the European Daily. If I share with other Europeans the need for a transnational daily newspaper, it’s probably because I share with them the idea of all-European unification.”
– Václav Havel, Late Playwright and President of the Czech Republic
HISTORY
The European Daily has evolved from an idea in a park in Paris in 2007. Christofer Berg and Johan Malmsten, two Swedes living in a European country other than their own, were missing a newspaper to read and relate to on a daily basis. The idea turned to inquiry and a vision started to take shape. In 2012, this vision will become reality.
PURPOSE, VISION AND MISSION
Political, economic and social integration has reshaped the European continent over the past 60 years. Yet this dynamic community lacks a common public sphere; lacks a daily newspaper of its own.
“I congratulate the European Daily team for making this contribution to Europe. Many have been waiting for this, myself included, and I believe that this publication can play an important role in bringing Europeans together around shared values and views.”
– Daniel Cohn-Bendit , European politician and icon of the 1968-movement
EDITORIAL LINE
The European Daily is unique in the European perspective it applies to news and analysis. This perspective means untangling ”national” news stories and bringing them into a wider European context in order to show how they affect the everyday life of Europeans.
First, we select the stories, issues and topics that matter to readers who interact with other Europeans – to a mobile Swede living in Milan, national elections in Finland are more interesting than local elections in Naples.
Second, we take the European level as our main reference point. A German travelling on the Eurostar train or a Portuguese living in Berlin can relate to a news source where Europe as a whole is treated as the “domestic space”. Conversely, news from outside of Europe – “Abroad” – is portrayed in how it impacts on Europe.
Third, debates on social, economic or environmental issues and trends are given a European dimension through comparisons and examples from different parts of Europe.
The European perspective is applied to current affairs, culture, business and sport in order to present a general, yet unique, newspaper.
The European Daily does not take a political stance as defined through party politics. Any political line is rather symbolised by the values shared with its readers: with metropolitan Europe as the starting point, we take an optimistic and progressivist stance in favour of globalisation and openness, while caring for social issues and the environment.
Through editorials and columns, views related to specific issues will be defined over time. Although EU politics will be covered as part of current affairs, we will stay clear of an exaggerated focus on Brussels.
Whereas an in-house editorial team is responsible for overall consistency and editing, the content will be commissioned from a wide network of freelance and stringer journalists. In its network, the European Daily already gathers some of the world’s best writers and columnists.
The regular columns will be supplemented by op-eds and commentaries by some of the most recognised opinion leaders. Former European Daily commentators include George Soros, Joschka Fischer, Ban Ki-moon, Tony Blair and Mikhail Gorbachev.
To summarise, the European Daily provides common reference points for a metaphorical “European dinner party” where open-minded, well-travelled and English-speaking Europeans from different walks of life can be informed, interact and discuss.
“The European Daily is an inspiration to all those looking for new insights into our world and Europe’s role in it.”
– José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission
